Random thoughts . . . Cincinnati related and otherwise.
  • A comment on Cincinnati.com mentioned the idea of Notre Dame joining the Big East in football. Not sure it will ever happen given the Irish TV deal, but can you imaging UC playing Notre Dame every year?
  • I enjoyed UFC 91 as Brock Lesner beat Randy Couture and there were a number of great fights including wins by Cincinnatians, Dustin Hazelett and Matt Brown. (They train here.)
  • My new favorite song is "Last Call" by Lee Ann Womack.
  • I think my favorite Christmas movie is "Elf". What is yours? And please no saccharine drivel like "It’s a Wonderful Life".
  • There is nothing like a really good kiss.
  • And Happy Thanksgiving!

Program Alert: “Building Holidays”

This is a reminder of the upcoming tour I will be doing and the main reason I have not been blogging as much . . .

ARCHITREKS presents "Building Holidays," a trolley tour illustrating the history of holiday traditions in America using the architectural sites and history of Downtown and Over-the-Rhine as a backdrop. The tour will integrate uniquely Cincinnati holiday events along the way and discuss the role of Cincinnati institutions, past and present, in the special season.

In addition to the many sites seen and discussed along the route, "Building Holidays" will include stops at Memorial Hall, Philippus United Church of Christ, and the Mercantile Library. The tour will share Cincinnati holiday memories such as the Ruth Lyons Children’s Christmas Fund and the Western & Southern Financial Group Nativity Scene at Krohn Conservatory. The tour will highlight both Jewish and Christian holiday customs, and the contributions of the ethnic groups that built America. For example, German immigrants brought many of their traditions to the New World, including the Christmas tree and Christmas card. The tour will also explore the influence of African-Americans on American holiday celebrations.

The approximately two-hour tour will take place on December 6, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Tours will depart from Fountain Square along Vine Street. Tickets are $15.00 and $5.00 for children, and can be reserved by contacting Cincinnati Preservation Association (info@cincinnatipreservation.org) or 513-721-4506. Seating is limited to 30 persons per tour and all will receive a complimentary souvenir of the tour.

ARCHITREKS is a program of the Cincinnati Preservation Association and "Building Holidays" is made possible in part with a generous donation from the Western & Southern Financial Fund.

Cincinnati March(itecture) Madness 2009!

Part II – Logo Contest!

I want a logo for Cincinnati March(itecture) Madness. (See Part I for the announcement.) I wanted one last year and just ran out of time to develop something. So this year I thought we would have a little contest to help me.

The Basics:
The logo should be a graphic representation that represents all of Cincinnati, the Queen City, and its architecture. Ideally I would like some iconography that combines the "Queen City" idea or theme with that of our built environment. I did a little free association:

ROEBLING BRIDGE, BRIDGES, SERPENTINE WALL, SKYLINE, GENIUS OF WATER, TYLER DAVIDSON FOUNTAIN, FOUNTAIN SQUARE, CINCINNATUS, RIVERFRONT, CAREW TOWER, CENTRAL TRUST, PORKOPLIS, PIGS, QUEEN CITY, RIVER, CANAL, CANAL BOATS, STEAMBOATS, PADDLEWHEEL, QUEEN OF THE WEST, OVER THE RHINE, BEER, GERMANS, ROYALTY, CROWN, CROWN JEWELS, HISTORY, NEIGHBORHOODS, RIVER VALLEY, ARCHITECTURE, HISTORY, UNION TERMINAL, MUSIC HALL, CHURCHES, CITY HALL, PARKS, OVERLOOKS

I am particularly drawn to the imagery of a crown and the image of the stack of a steamboat and possibly the juxtaposition of those two images. But I am open to all other ideas. Steamboat image from flickr.

The Submission:
Please submit one jpeg image. The logo or graphic should include the text "Cincinnati" and "March(itecture) Madness" in some fashion. No date is to be included as I will use the same logo from year to year. See some examples from the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Final Four that I thought conveyed the idea I am going for. All images from the NCAA and I will remove if told I have to.

The Prize:
The selected winner will receive a Cincinnati prize package. Items will include but are not limited to the following:
- Limited Edition "Raise the Rutherford!" T-shirt
- Rutherford B. Hayes & Lucy Hayes Magnet from the Hayes Presidential Center.
- Three month membership to the Cincinnati Athletic Club (For men only. If a woman should win, she will be awarded a cash equivalent.
- Gift Certificate for Graeters
- Gift Certificate for Skyline
- Cincinnati Key Chain
- Cincinnati Playing Cards

Deadline:
Email all entries by 8:00 AM on January 2, 2008.

The Rules:
- You may submit more than one entry.
- Logo should include color.
- Queen City Survey reserves the sole right to pick a winner although leaves the option open to have a poll in January of top choices that can be used in determining an ultimate winner.
- A winner will be selected and given the prize package, however Queen City Survey reserves the right not to use the winning entry or to modify it with the consent of the submitter.

The Timeline:
The logo winner will be announced in late January or early February. More details will be released as the January 2 deadlines approaches.
The Cincinnati March(itecture) Madness 2009 competition begins March 1!
Good luck and thanks!

Cincinnati March(itecture) Madness 2009!

Part I – Announcement!

Last weekend kicked off of the local 2008-2009 college basketball season. Xavier began play on Friday and UC began play on Sunday, November 16. To celebrate, Queen City Survey is announcing that March(itecture) Madness will be back in 2009.

The Road to Cincinnati March(itecture) Madness 2009 begins today.

A few announcements though about the coming season . . .

First, the field of 32 buildings will be selected in a slightly different manner than last year. Gone are the automatic berths for all Cincinnati National Historic Landmarks. This will mean a tough road for structures like the Baum-Taft House, the Alphonso Taft House, the George Hunt Pendleton House, and the Showboat Majestic to make it in. But the change will hopefully add some new buildings and create enough interested to keep people coming back to vote. The Championship Match between Music Hall and Union Terminal went to Overtime last year with a tie vote. So I am actually curious to see if there might be a re-match and would Music Hall win again? If you have a favorite building or structure that you would like to see in the field of 32, let me know.

Second, I think I’m going to pay extra to be able to imbed the actual bracket in the post as opposed to just a link. Not sure how many people actually looked at the bracket last year. Click here to see how the bracket shaped up from last year.

Third, I am going to try and condense the voting a little. Up until the semi-finals, four matches will be voted on each time. However, I am also going to eliminate voting continuing over a weekend. I may end on a Saturday or begin on a Sunday but I thought when voting spanned a weekend, we got lower participation.

And finally, I want a logo for Cincinnati March(itecture) Madness. In Part II I will announce details for a contest to help me design one.

A round-up of the week’s sporting news

Bengals
The Bengals cannot do anything normal it seems. They do not win nor do they lose this week and come away with a tie versus the Philadelphia Eagles. I actually took a nap and didn’t see the end of the game. Bengals play tonight!

Bearcats
The Bearcats continued their winning ways with a victory over Louisville in Louisville. Many are calling it one of the most important wins in the history of the program. They are now ranked 20th in the Coaches’ Poll and 19th in both the AP poll and the BCS Standings. Huge, huge game this weekend at home versus Pittsburgh. I'm telling you this better be the largest crowd ever at Nippert or I will be disappointed. A win this week and the Orange Bowl looks very promising. Checking ESPN.com, Bruce Feldman predicted a bid to the FedEx Orange Bowl, against the University of Miami, Florida. Mark Schlabach now predicts a bid to the FedEx Orange Bowl versus Maryland. We need to take one game at a time however.

As a side note, everyone is talking about Kelly being offered the job at Tennessee. I'm sorry people but as long as UC is doing well, no matter the coach, there are always going to be rumors that he is leaving for a bigger school. I personally would rather have that than a whipping boy program where no one is interested in the coach at all.

Avondale's Eden

I was on Forest Avenue today and noticed this house out of the corner of my eye . . . 3547 Eden Avenue. I had to get a closer look.

Do not know any history really except it looks as if it was a nursing home.

Veteran’s Day thoughts . . . Cincinnati related and otherwise.
  • Cincinnati was named after the Society of Cincinnati, a Revolutionary War veteran’s group.
  • Places like Fort Thomas, Fort Wright, Fort Mitchell, and Camp Dennison all have military pasts.
  • When I was young I always thought it was odd that my father was stationed in Germany during the Korean Conflict and not in Korea.
  • Fort Washington was used as a military base only from 1789 to 1803.
  • Four ships have been named the USS Cincinnati. The last was a submarine decommissioned in 1996. There was an effort to bring all or part of it here but it was literally scrapped.

Baedeker: Serpent Mound

This past weekend I made a road trip to the Serpent Mound in Adams County, Ohio. I had never been there and I was hoping to catch the end of the fall color. I think I was a week or two too late but it was interesting nevertheless.

"Atop a plateau overlooking the Brush Creek Valley, Serpent Mound is the largest and finest serpent effigy in the United States. Nearly a quarter of a mile long, Serpent Mound apparently represents an uncoiling serpent."

The site, northwest of Locust Grove and about an hour and forty-five minutes, due east of Cincinnati, is a National Historic Landmark as well as a State Memorial operated by the Ohio Historical Society. There is a small museum usually open on the weekends from Memorial Day to Labor Day. I think it was supposed to cost $7 to park but no one was there to take my money.
Geologically, the site is also supposed to be of interest. It sits on part of a rock formation called either a cryptovolcanic or crytoexplosive structure, depending on which account you read. Basically there are a series of concentric ridges formed by either a striking meteorite or ancient volcanic upheaval and the mound was formed on one of these ridges. ODNR released a report in 2003 that concludes it was a meteor that struck the site and created the resulting geological formations in the area.

Yes, probably interesting only to me.
Sorry but it was overcast all day . . .

Author's Note: Baedeker was a German-based travel guide begun in 1827 by Karl Baedeker. These comprehensive guides were hugely popular in Europe, the United States, and throughout the British Empire. I have adopted the moniker for all my travel pieces beyond Cincinnati. Given its German history and stately influence, I thought it fitting for the Queen City.

A round-up of the week’s sporting news

Bengals
The Bengals enjoyed a bye week after their first win of the season. I did however want to show a clip of Chad kissing Marvin Lewis after a touchdown during that game. I’ve decided not use Chad’s last name, whatever it may be. So it is just "Chad" much like Cher.

Bearcats
The big local sports news though was the Bearcat’s win over West Virginia in overtime. Many are calling it one of the most important wins in the history of the program. While the win propelled UC to being ranked for the first time this year at 22nd, three important Big East games remain. The Bearcats cannot afford to overlook Louisville this Friday followed by home games against Pitt and Syracuse. All are must wins to secure a BCS bowl. And the.

And speaking of bowls, UC announced the release of Bearcat Bowl Central, a website to inform every one of the details to all the Big East bowl options. Checking ESPN.com, Bruce Feldman predicted a bid to the FedEx Orange Bowl, meaning UC obviously wins the Big East. Mark Schlabach predicted a bid to the Meineke Care Car Bowl with Pitt winning the Big East and going to the BCS game.

Blog Alert: Blogger Question

Anyone know why Blogger may be cutting off photos or images that are from the web? The format of images from say the Library's Cincinnati Memory site are huge and getting cut off. Image size doesn't seem to help. See post below for instance.

Thanks in advance.

The Line Forms Here

The line to vote at the Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library downtown a little before 8:00 AM today.

Final Countdown: Elections!

Last year I was all about the local council elections. With the focus this year on the Presidential Election, Queen City Survey has not had much election news to pass along. I will say three things . . .

1.) Vote!
Downtown Resident’s Council email had some great links for some basic information. Check out their website link at the right.

2.) Issue 8 - Proportional Response
I have been trying to put down my thoughts on Proportional Response in some clear, concise way. I can’t. I’ve been working on a post for over a month. In short, I am not for it. I think looking at electing council via a ward system and with some at-large members has merit (as has been proposed and discussed) but I do not agree with Proportional Response. I do not, in the end, think it serves the greater good. I honestly think it benefits minor fringe candidates. I am voting no on Issue 8.

3.) Television
The plus side of the elections is that Bravo is airing one of my favorite shows, The West Wing.

Cincinnati’s Monday Sports Manager

A round-up of the week’s sporting news

Bengals
Well, what do you know . . . the Bengals win their first game of the year with a 21 – 19 victory over Jacksonville in front of the home crowd at Paul Brown Stadium. I was especially please because I went to the game. I thought the defense looked good with three sacks and a ton of pressure on Garrard. Chad was a factor in the game on the field and sure likes to kiss off the field. Fitzpatrick played well enough, however he over threw his received more than once and had an interception. Cedric Benson had just over 100 yards rushing. The near goat of the game however was on Special Teams with Glenn Holt fumbling a kick-off return allowing the Jags to make it a 21 – 13 game in favor of the Bengals.
Bearcats
And the Bearcats actually started the winning ways last Thursday with an upset of then No. 24 ranked South Florida. The defense looked great and Pike played well in the 24 – 10 victory. That makes the UC football team 6 – 2 on the season and a trip to Morgantown awaits them this weekend to take on West Virginia. The Mountaineers are ranked 23rd in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll and it looks to be a tough road game. The Bearcats are currently unranked in the Coaches’ Poll, although if you did the math they would be like tied for 33rd. This is a quality win that the Bearcats need.

Stacked

On my way home from Books by the Banks I took this photo of the Amelia Valerio Weinberg Memorial Fountain (1990) by Michael Fresca in front of the Cincinnati and Hamilton County Public Library. I thought it fitting. Oh, and I finally joined the Mercantile Library. Long overdue . . . Pun intended.

Random thoughts . . . Cincinnati related and otherwise.
  • With news that the Terrace Plaza has closed, check out my post on the place earlier in the year and the building and its architect.
  • I love Javier’s for lunch but I went there for dinner over the weekend and while the food was good, service was not. Friends that went there too said the same thing. They better fix that and soon.
  • While giving a tour and standing out in front of Music Hall recently, some guy walked by and mumbled under his breath but loud enough to hear something like "F***ing people moving in then taking up the sidewalk".
  • Ran across a good national blog, City Parks Blog. Newest article on transit and the most used parks.
  • Looking forward to seeing Australia and Daniel Craig in the new Bond film and in Defiance.
