Love, Cincinnati Style

A Queen City Survey Guide to Romance

In preparation of Valentine’s Day this Thursday, I was going to recommend those special romantic spots in Cincinnati to woo and impress your loved one. Of course, nothing says love to me more than a building so these will probably take a decidedly architectural/urban slant.

Fountain Square
The ice skating rink is open noon to 8:00 pm and is having a two-for-one special for Valentine’s Day. Add dinner at a nearby restaurant plus carriage rides and ice cream from Graeter’s and it does not get much more Cincinnati on Valentines Day than that.

Carew Tower
If not to cold, first hit the Carew Tower Observation Deck for a great urban view at say dusk. Have dinner following at Boi Na Braza, Morton’s, or Orchids at the Palm Court. While I haven’t had dinner at Orchids in a while, nothing really beats the interiors so at the very least I suggest getting a drink there. End the evening at the Valentine’s Day Party beginning at 8:00 pm at the Havana Martini Club.

Ault Park
It might be a little cold for a stroll around Ault Park but I just love the pavilion. Completed in 1930, the building was designed by Fechheimer & Ihorst and the grounds were designed by landscape architect Albert D. Taylor who also designed Alms and Mount Echo parks. If warm enough I’d pack a little picnic but odds are that it will be cold or snowy so walk around hand-in-hand and then head to either Hyde Park Square or Oakley Square for drinks, dinner, and dessert.

Eden Park
If you are looking for something other than a quickie at lunch, I suggest going to the Art Museum’s Café for a bite to eat and then maybe a walk around Krohn Conservatory as their Spring Show is going on. Both the Museum & Krohn are only open until 5:00 pm on Valentine’s Day.

Covington
Sorry Veggie Option but it is rare I suggest venturing across the Ohio River. But for this Valentine’s Day I am making an exception. I’m thinking dinner at the Greenup Café followed by a stroll along the Riverwalk to see Cincinnati in the twinkle of night. Then head up to The Madison for the Flogging Molly show at 8:00 pm. There is just something about seeing an Irish band named Flogging Molly on Valentine’s Day . . .

Over-the-Rhine
For our gay and gay friendly readers (like maybe two of you) I was going to suggest going to see Take Me Out at New Stage Collective followed by drinks at what Below Zero Lounge is calling Chill. Every Thursday Below Zero is having live music and this week it is Terry LaBolt bringing his Sunday Cabaret to Thursday from 8:00 to 11:00 pm. The problem is Thursday’s performance of Take Me Out is SOLD OUT. Know Theatre however is having a special Concert:Nova Valentine Day’s show. Tickets are a little steep at $75 a person but I guess it is Valentine’s Day . . .

One warning: You all do realize that, in the immortal words of Christian Slater in Pump Up the Volume, "If I knew anything about love, I’d be out there making it instead of sitting in here talking to you guys."
