Cabaret at Below Zero Lounge

The Sunday before Christmas, a friend and I went to Below Zero Lounge, 1120 Walnut Street, to check out the Cabaret with Terry LaBolt. I had heard about it. And read about it a while ago in the Downtowner. I just hadn’t ventured over as I normally work the next day. But since Monday was a holiday for me I thought it would be a great opportunity. And it was.

Cabaret starts at 9:00 and ends at midnight every Sunday. We got there late and there was a great crowd gathered. The bar itself was full. Most tables and lounge seating was occupied. And there were a few folks sitting at the piano as Terry played. I usually feel out of place at those trendy places among the beautiful people, but for some reason I didn’t here. There was a nice vibe and I somehow felt welcome and relaxed. We got some drinks and sat down at one of the tables. Service on those first drinks was a little slow but it happens and isn’t unexpected at crowded places. The next time we had no issues at all. Terry sang some Christmas tunes (and some other standards) and two other folks sang with him at times. One was JC Diaz, a CCM graduate and a 2006 Fringe Festival performer, and the other’s name I didn’t catch. I ran in to a few people I knew. And I think my friend knew everyone else. (I’m only slightly exaggerating.)

We left after midnight. My friend had actually never even been to Below Zero and he was the first to comment that we need to come back. I do not disagree.
